This collection of essays discusses the contribution of labor movements to social and cultural developments in the 20th century. Based on different case studies and analyses the authors direct their attention to the impact of labour movements on the construction of the welfare state on the one hand and to the traces in the field of cultural production on the other. Besides similarities and differences particular attention is paid to the cleavages between achievements and failures, between intended and unintended consequences and as well between the ‘global north’ and the ‘global south’.
