Labour History Beyond Borders: Concepts
and Explorations
The eleven essays collected in this volume deal with important aspects of
the historical and contemporary development of the world working class.
They attempt to transcend the geographical, temporal and disciplinary boundaries
between historiography, anthropology, and other social sciences. The essays
discuss four central themes: methodological and theoretical questions; the
development of the global textile industry since 1650; the connections between
labour migration on the one hand and the integration of rural/agricultural
regions into the capitalist world economy on the other hand; and ideological
and religious reorientations accompanying processes of (partial) proletarianization.
